Sideboard w/ Leaves - Before & After

After a brief painting hiatus, I am back. I just completed another piece for a client this weekend. And I must confess, I was very scared when this piece was dropped off at my house. It was blonde oak, brass and in really rough shape. I don't know why I have such an aversion to brass, but it really makes me shudder.

Over the River and Through the Woods to Carter's Cottage

Last week, my husband gave me the day off. Yes, you heard me, an entire day without having to dress, bathe, feed or transport anyone but myself. Glorious. So what did I decide to do...hop in the car and drive out to the heart of downtown DeKalb, Ill. to visit my local Annie Sloan stockist, Carter's Cottage.

Previously, I had bought my paint from a local store that shipped to my home and at a store in Tennessee when I went to visit my parents, but from now on I am making the drive out to DeKalb to see Christie.

Window Shopping Wednesday - Vanity Light Fixtures

It's time again for Window Shopping Wednesday, a new feature on Pretty Distressed designed to help you shop from the comfort of your computer chair. No showering or makeup required.

This week I am taking a look at bathroom vanity light fixtures. Light fixtures can be a big investment, but in the grand scheme of remodeling costs, you can get a lot of bang for your buck by replacing a dated fixture. And in most cases, they are pretty easy to install as long as you follow the safety instructions included with your purchase.

Look at the difference in my own master bath once I updated my $35 builder grade light with the Argenta 5 Light Vanity Light from Z-Lite.

Pin-spired: DIY Country Chic Window Treatments

branch curtain rod

Are you a Pinterest addict like me? I love that there is a simple place to go for inspiration and store it all in neat little categories. This weekend, I finally turned one of those pins into reality, and I am beyond excited to be sharing it with you today.

This project was "pin"-spired by Jennifer over at Town and Country Living. I am a little bit obsessed with burlap. I love its natural, earthy color and the relaxed, country vibe it gives off. I really loved the idea of pairing it with a tree branch for an extra punch of rustic charm.

Window Shopping Wednesday - Wall Hooks

Happy Wednesday and welcome to the first edition of what I hope will be a new weekly post- Window Shopping Wednesday.

Let's face it. In our busy lives we don't always have time to scour the flea market or stop by that cute little antique shop that is an hour away or even hack or upcycle something from around the house. Sometimes it is just easier to take a seat at the computer and shop from the comfort of your own home (or cube, don't worry I won't tell your boss).

So today, I bring you Window Shopping Wednesday. Each week I hope to share a decorating idea with you and then give you some products you can buy to recreate the look.

This creative way to use a wall hook comes from Chris at Just A Girl. I just love this idea for the bathroom instead of using a plain old towel rack.

Yesterday, we had our first family gathering at our home to celebrate J-man's birthday and our house warming. I am embarrassed to tell you this is the first gathering we have had at our home since we moved in last September.

I know, what took me so long? Fear. The fear of what people would think of our home. If you have hung around this blog for a while now, you know we have done a lot of work on our house. It wasn't in the best shape when we purchased it, but we fell in love with the neighborhood and schools here. Luckily for me, my husband saw the potential in this place. After about seven months, I am finally getting to the point where I can look around my house and say that I love it.

I am a really impatient person, so this whole process has been a real period of growth for me. During this time God has given me the great gift of looking at things in a new light. Seeing used decor or things I already have and turning them into something beautiful. Instead of praying for a windfall of money to come our way, He has taught me to roll up my sleeves and do some hard work myself. With that, came an opportunity to start writing about it.

Bathroom Vanity Makeover with Latex Paint

Our master bath has been a pretty big eye sore since we moved in. It is your standard builder grade bathroom with no upgrades. It is going to be a long time before we have the funds to remodel this puppy, so I decided to do my best to make it more to my liking the DIY way.

Simple Easter Decor

I hate to admit it, but I really don't enjoy decorating for holidays. The thought of storing all that extra stuff that I only use for a couple weeks kind of gives me hives, but after a long, gloomy winter I decided a little spring decor would be good for the soul.

Foyer - Before & After

I look around my house sometimes, and all I can see are the mountains of projects I need to tackle. It is often hard for me to pause and reflect on just how far we have come on our journey of making this house a home. Today, I want to take the time to slow down and enjoy my foyer.
